do existing nodes auto convert to categories

I am using a cck node type as categories in a container. It seems to work correctly if i add a new node and go to container and list categories i see it there - but i dont see the ones that i created before i enabled this feature.
Does this not convert all the nodes once the feature is enabled. Is there maybe a module to do this? Am i missing something? Pretty sure this is an important part of the very powerful feature (nodes as terms).
Also, i was pretty sure i did this on another project and it worked.. but maybe not???

Support request almost 2 years old... Obviously about 5.x version (not really supported)... I guess there's not much of a point about keeping this open.
I'm not sure about 5.x, but on 6.x we just switch node types to behave as categories, so it should work.
Feel free to re-open this issue, if needed.
