New User Email is Delayed by 24 hours?

ShiftThis - March 10, 2005 - 03:51

When registering as a new user on my site, the password email doesn't get delivered for at least 24 hours. However once I finally received the email the next day, it says it was sent right when I registered. I've tested this with multiple email locations and it's consistant. I haven't recieved any complaints yet, but none of my users are actually logging in because by the time they've gotten there password they aren't interested anymore.

Any ideas what the problem is?

I just registered

..though, typically, Drupal sends the mail immediately. However, I noticed that you're using IIS on a MS server. Is your SMTP server configured to queue emails that go through it? Do you have any antivirus programs installed that quarantine emails for a period before sending them through? I'm guessing that this is an SMTP mail server configuration problem. Additionally, if your SMTP server uses a "smart host" to relay files for you, it may be queued up there. Check the outbound mail queue on your server for a backlog of emails. Your IP block belongs to maximumasp.com, so I'm guessing that there's a good chance they have a "smart host" defined for your server to use, as this is common in an MS environment, and you'll have to talk to them if it's not your server that's holding them up.

Update: by the time I finished writing this post, I already recieved the email, so whatever was slowing it down seems to have been fixed.

Thanks

My host is actually a Linux machine, but I thank you for your suggestions. I don't personally have access to much but my database and ftp space with this host, so I doubt I could do much with the server settings themselves. I was going to email my host about this issue, but if the registration is working up to speed now, I'm going to assume it's fixed itself for now.

If anyone else has a minute to register on my site (ShiftThis.net) and let me know how long it takes for your password email to arrive, I would appreciate it.

I have exactly the same

I have exactly the same problem with my mails. some show up on time, but most show up 24 hours later...

my sites running on a virtual dedicated server at Media Temple. its a standard linux build running sendmail, I can't see any reason for this delay in the configurations of anythign critical.

have you had any luck finding a solution?
