I would suspect that every site has node types for which there is no need to be able to create a menu item; most of us just ignore it. My customer found his users getting very confused when they saw that there was the capability to assign a forum posting to the menu. As much as I hated to do it, I had to do a quick-and-dirty hack to core (5.2). [Hey at least it means I get paid again when he upgrades...]
So, it would be nice if the "menu settings" fieldset could be enabled/disabled on a content type basis.
