The original field #description is lost if the imagefield_crop widget is being used, because imagefield_crop_widget_process() overwrites it. Will roll a patch soon that resolves the issue by simply removing imagefield_crop's text, thus leaving the original, Field UI-based #description intact.

I suggest concat instead
