Maxlength form alter is too aggressive, affects more fields than desired

I am new to this module but after installing it I see fields have the maxlength js field and count down message field almost everywhere there is a text area on the site. Some of these areas, like the "Explanation or submission guidelines" field on the "Submission form settings" page of a node edit page just don't make any sense.
