Garland + Image module galleries CSS layout!

I'm using the Garland theme and the basic image galleries generated by the Image module... but in both IE and in Firefox the layout is chaotic at best - and almost unusable in some cases.
In IE the thumbnails are scattered all over the place, and look very untidy, while in Firefox they're neatly stacked into a grid touching each other, but lay over the top of the 1,2,3,4,5 page links at the bottom...
Can anyone point me to a way of altering the CSS to create a better layout of those image galleries? Or any suggestions about CSS alterations to garland/image module galleries specifically?
