The date changed faceted tends to be used very little in real world situations. Unless there is a compelling reason to keep it, I would suggest removing it, or at least using Facet API's dependency system to only show the facet in situations where it would be useful.

As discussed with Ezra, postponing this feature request. Feedback on the search experience of older versions of Commons is that it is difficult to find content recently updated. This may be answered by relevancy integration with Voting / Radioactivity / etc, however that is Solr-only and not yet implemented.
