Currently every gallery is displayed as a potential reference during the creating of an item node (in this case image) through the node/add link.

Is there any way to restrict this drop-down to only show galleries created by the user?

At the moment, there is not a way to do this.

This is going to be tricky to implement, because how can we handle the situation where the item is in a gallery that doesn't belong to a user, but the user is allowed to edit it? (because they are a content admin or something)

I need to think about this a bit more.

For me that would be very important because I run a large community. This would be very confusing for the members, if they can post pictures in all galleries.

I very much hope that you will be to find a way.
