For nodes with one or more user reference fields, it should be possible for a user to sign up for a role expressed by one of those fields. For example, a node representing a meeting of a Toastmasters club, a user should be able to set himself up as a speaker, evaluator, etc. if that role (as expressed by a CCK user reference field or otherwise) is currently empty.

User reference fields allow you to reference a user, not a role. Can you clarify how you see using the field for this feature?
