I'm wondering what the checkbox labelled 'Enable the Revisions page for this content type ' on my content type actually does ? I seem to have a revisions page with Diff integration whether it is checked or not at node/nid/revisions.

Doesn't do much, controls access to the revisions page. Access can also be granted using "administer nodes" permission, which is what you are probably seeing.
