This module seems somewhat orphaned, no?

Project:Video
Version:5.x-1.x-dev
Component:Miscellaneous
Category:support request
Priority:critical
Assigned:Unassigned
Status:closed (fixed)

Issue Summary

Hello, I don't mean to be rude but this module seems a bit orphaned. Do you need a comaintainer (not that I can do it, but maybe someone can help)?

I posted an "interesting" open letter to you Fabio (fax8) here. Have a read:

No response for quite a while and a bit of a nasty queue building up. Does anyone want to help comaintain this module to get some of these patches addressed? The upgrade to 6 will need to happen soon.

#2

sadly this module has a TON of issues and apparently we were suppose to see a new completely rewritten version from the owner a few months back but that never happened.

having the video module in this condition is really brutal for Drupal with the extreme demand of video driven web sites.

I have a custom version that i have tweaked, fixed, hacked, etc.. to get into a stable position that I can even consider deploying on a client site however i find the workflow of this module quite clunky and lacking in many directions.

this module needs a sponsor for a rewrite. end of story.

especially if you want to see this for d6.

hmm And I really like this module,
Show/upload the hacked code :-) , does it solve the "random delete function"

This module is too good to leave a lonely death ...

#4

In essence this hack says to comment out all instance of the file delete function in video_image. Follow progress on the random deletions here:

I think the video module is probably finished. The days of having a module for a node "type" in this case 'video' are over. Now everything can done with CCK.

And as it looks like fax8 has left the scene and there has been no update from him as to status of Version 6 on the official Drupal 6 module update page. http://groups.drupal.org/node/5036

I think it best we consider alternative. That being using CCK field. The "Embedded Media Field" module would serve pretty good. It just needs to have functionality written in to support local url, instead of only videos stored on YouTube or other place.

And it already has an import capability, the only needed to do a site conversion would be a video export script.

Just a heads up that we are working on something.

As said, a specific video.module is not needed these days with the combo of views / cck.

What we are doing is working on a few components to replace the video module.

- filefield for ckk is very clean and well made so we have decided to build a filefield_video so we do not recreate anything we do not need to and only create the basic video features needed

- ffmpeg is a custom module we are currently working to handle that component

- job queue which is already made by drumm which we will integrate with to handle the cron portion of ffmpeg jobs

I'm pretty sure this new solution that we are working on will make video life in drupal a lot easier, manageable and much more efficient.

I've been working with a custom hacked version of video.module that i have been tweaking for a long time now and all these new features will be brought into this new module.

This is a sponsored project and we are doing the best we can to launch this in January for Drupal 5.x

I have just begun to use flashvideo.module and find it a fairy suitable replacement so my question is if there is talk between theowner of the flashvideo.module and you on your new project to interoperate.

#8

PLEASE not flash only!!!! I like the idea to have it all done using CCK but PLEASE PLEASE do not see Flash as the end of the world! I personally would never never ever use flash to play video - mainly its dog slow and looks shit and if it doesn´t look shit it takes bandwidth that is about triple that of a professionally made MPG4 at the same quality - not to mention that the processor resources it needs are demanding a 2 year old computer at least - locking out about 80% of the internet population. Not even to talk about closed source properitory nonstandard Adobe Bullshit.

A good module for me (content developer mostly in the video field) would allow me to assign object/plugins for playing specific media files (in a preference setting). It would let me choose a thumbnail picture as an option.

For all those things the video.module rocks (and its the reason I came to drupal in the first place btw!). Stripping any of this functionality for amateurish flash bullshit is unacceptable (like the media manager project).

And if you are working on something please be open what you do and how your thoughts are so we can at least comment or even help getting this integrated as soon as possible.

shit son.. simmer down :P

this will be covered.

JW Player is the Flash player we will be doing the FLV implementation with but yes, other formats use different players. It's just theme functions like how video.module does it for types.

#10

Steve, is there a project page or site where people can follow the progress of this project you describe, or get involved?

Some of us are eager to stop wrestling with the broken video module and move onward...

thanx!

#11

you can watch my blog for now.. http://stevemckenzie.ca

I just put up that blog so it's still kinda bare but I did make a post about what's going on with it.

I will do another report on progress today closer to the end of the work day and just for the record, we are aiming to start qa on a complete version on Monday!

So starting next week, we will be releasing all the pieces to the puzzle.

Our system has something like 10 modules that vary in features / api.

#12

let us know if there is any need for help... this is such an essential module - but I guess I covered that ;) I would like to offer some time in return for a speedy development ;)

#13

hey steve.. no need to create another video module.. there are already a lot of them.

If you want to contribute your efforts I'm open to any kind of collaboration.

#14

its a little late.

we will be showing our stuff at drupalcon.

ours goes an entirely different approach than others which is why we went that way.

On top of it, we have constant clients wanting video on their site and we wanted things done a certain way.

some stuff has been released already by dopry and the rest will follow soon.

I know I was late with my date I originally said but meh, it was worth it.

#15

Hi Steve, how's that new module going?

#16

yeah, how's it going? no post on your blog about it since january 22 when you said "We are still aiming to release this week!"

what's up?

#17

pieces have been released.

it's a bit of list, but majority of them have been released by dopry.

it still has its bugged and we all got caught up in a lot of client work (like usual).

Transformer is one of them, filefield as well..

you can see here on his profile..

im sure he'd be cool with releasing the rest. like the ffmpeg module.

well, this issue seems like it has run its course. The module is still pretty much adrift and if folks want to pursue other modules, probably other queues and the forums are better for that discussion. I'm going to close this as an unactionable issue.

See http://drupal.org/node/248117

I posted a patch that brings much of video module up to date with D6. Please test.
