Product funcationality (add-to-cart, quantity, color, social media, etc.) only works when debugging enabled

I created subthemes from Omega Kickstart and Commerce Kickstart using these methods

1. with Omega Tools
2. copying the entire theme and adjusting the files

With either method the functionality in the product view (and that may not be the correct term since I am a newbie) is only working when debugging (at least "Enable the debugging (placeholder) blocks for the selected roles") is enabled. In production mode (no debugging) the add-to-cart button, the color chooser list, the quantity spinner, the social media buttons (like on Facebook, etc.) are non-functional. They are displayed but you cannot click on them.

I have been searching for hours and hours to find the cause for this issue to no avail. Thanks for your support.
