Images and html tags not working correctly [SOLVED!]

I have set a home page (basic page) in 'Configuration->System->Site Information->Default front page'
I have an image on this page (resized using 'Imagepicker') which can be seen when editing, but not when viewing or previewing the page.
Also simple html formatting on pages is not working.
For instance the same page has an h2 tag for the first line but is shows as a normal line when viewed or previewed.
I am using Drupal 7.18 with Omega 7.x-3.1 (I have tried a different theme, but same problem)
I am not entirely new to Drupal. The tags and images work OK in version 6 on another site.
Any ideas would be welcome.

What text format are you editing the content with? Try setting to "Full HTML" before saving and see what happens.

Well Done cfox612, switching to 'full html' before saving did the trick.
