Continue to struggle with this ultra sophisticated monster.
So I've installed all of the following and still cannot find a simple textual description of how I get an image to display in a post. The image attach project has no documentation that I can find and I don't see any options when I'm editing a post/page/story, etc. I want to use this cms but... Any help appreciated.

Now another question, is there a way to make it possible to upload 2 images to one node?
and another question: If I upload a new image to attach to a story node, the image node is always published to the frontpage. Is there a way to turn that off?
No, you can only attach one

About the front page -- do you mean you're getting both the story node AND the image node on the front page? Try changing the default settings for the image content type: deselect 'promoted to front page'.
Inserting images, or attaching them?
Do you just want to be able to insert images in nodes, or do you want to attach image nodes to other types of nodes? I think the image attach module makes you create a separate image node before you can attach it to another node.
If you just want to be able to insert images in nodes, use a module like IMCE instead. I think that your installed image assist module will do the same. I don't think the image attach module works that well on sites.

its also depends on your needs, best solution would be you to set up a local test site and test each module to see the best image solution to fit your needs
each module developed to address a need from developer's approach so, variety and 'confusion' is inevitable, de facto of most 'open source' software

It seems to have a lot of features that image.module is missing, but it's only a dev release that's not very posished.
Why didn't the developer work with the already existing image module? It's ironic that the project page says 'Badly seeking co-maintainers'. This fragmentation hurts developers, and hurts end-users who don't want 'variety'. We get two or more half-baked projects instead of one good one.

concept cars
i have not tried the pictures module, but its looks like a nice concept, but we can not expect a good looking concept car to run :) especially they are parked in a carpark with other cars and provided free.
added confusion is there is no sticker on it that reads 'this is a concept car and it does not work :)
