I'm building a front page of a store and I need to set up a featured product block. I was thinking about putting a field in the node as a sort of flag for a views filter but the only thing about this method is the previous featured item won't be unchecked. Any suggestions?

There might be more modules along these lines, so you might want to do a couple more searches along the lines of unique/exclusive/single value/field/flag/whatever.

You can also do this with the flag module-- iirc, there's an option for only 1 item to be flagged at a time.
