It appears that there is an Atom Feed module which was last updated in drupal 4.4. It seems to me that it would make sense for the syndication module to offer all the methods of syndication in one place rather than having a bunch of distinct modules.

Would it be possible to at the very least combine the RSS and Atom feeds into one module?

IMHO even better would be the inclusion of all RSS-related stuff into core. Installing an external module for such basic things shouldn't be necessary for a Drupal user if you ask me.
