Actually could this be integrated with the existing module Term Reference Autocreate that provides similar?

https://www.drupal.org/project/term_reference_autocreate

autocreate

or similar to "Taxonomy Super Select" module

"Taxonomy Super Select

Perhaps this can be adopted. I take that refreshing the new terms is the trickier part. :)

FYI

Yes please, that would be awesome, so much easier and better for newbies!

I have been using this widget for a long time now, even in places where i would be tempted to use "chosen" within a select list (with type ahead search and select), because the traditional methods don't show hierarchies that well and easy like this one here does so well.

Temporary Workaround
Otherwise I will have to include some instruction text inside the widget OR within the category field description for some admins to point out that they can add new terms via the Taxonomy Manager and perhaps link that to "/admin/structure/taxonomy_manager/voc/" and ofcourse emphasize they need to reload the node edit form for the new term to appear :).
