Zen Theme: Why is main menu present in navigation bar region even when no block present?

I have a clean install of zen theme. I do not want the main menu present in the navigation bar region. when I remove all blocks from the navigation bar region the menu is still present. When I place the main menu block in the navigation bar region there are two menu bars. Can someone explain how to resolve this? See the screenshot here. It shows my "home" and "page1" menu links doubled while the menu block is enabled.

to disable the main menu in your zen subtheme:
edit the theme settings (administer -> appearance -> settings ->your zen subtheme
uncheck main menu (and secondary for that matter) under toggle display
save the form
