My kids just joined www.diy.org, a cool site with a lot of projects for kids to do. The sign up for kids involved providing a parents' email address. The account was then stalled until I received an email and clicked the provided link to approve the account. I'm wondering if this would be possible in Drupal.
Additionally, I have a dashboard where I get a view of their activity. It's a pretty smart way of dealing with the under-13 issue and something that I would like to try replicating with Drupal.
