can't deselect facet

Here's the scenario: The facet blocks & current search block show up great. Now, if I try to narrow down the results and one choice is made (narrowing down by user name, keywords etc.) it narrows the results on the page but the respective choice can no longer be deselected.
It happened after updating to search api 1.4 from 1.3 (did it because was a security release)

Here's the steps I took to no avail:
Uninstalled facet api 1.2, deleted it from server and reinstalled it
Restored database from back up
Cleaned all cache (drupal, server, neighbor's vps)
