When accessing the /archive link with a clean install.. you end up with a very big list of watchdog items...

I was silly enough to hit the archive link from navigation in an empty install. (eg. fresh install)

This resulted in a very long wait for a page to come up, and eventually I cancelled the request...
Only to find out that the watchdog-table had been filled up with about 200Mb worth of notices...

Looks like there's a little bump in the road in the 'theme_archive_navigation_years' function....
