Ok, now I'm starting to feel like a pain in the ass.

It seems that a similar issue to http://drupal.org/node/188878 is also preventing emails going out.

The attached patch fixes the issue in the same way as before.

Now of course I'm starting to think that it is my install that is abnormal. Let me know if you are able to reproduce these issues or if I should double check my version of Drupal.
