It would be helpful to have the ability to use remote images instead of uploaded images. For example, for a gallery, I would like to have pictures from remote hosts. Instead of uploading these images, it would save hosting space if the users can use the reote URL for the pictures and only create thumbnails for previews at drupal sites.

hakcayurek commentedps: I can modify image module for that purpose if somebody can suggest which functions I need to modify and how.

Bartjuh commentedI would definitly like that, because my current host is expensive (but reliable and fast), but i got some alternative hosts with no server side abilities. Perfect to host a lot of photos.
But with the current image nodes, this is not possible.
Or i could just write a lot of html code in a node (with lightbox link) manually, and add each node to a gallery. That works, but that would be so very much and dull work for 2500 photos!

Bartjuh commentedI was planning to write a node module for this, but i changed my mind. I don't have much time on my hands, and i'll think of a solution less time consuming.

ardee-1 commentedI too would really like the option of referencing existing files (either locally on the server, or by URL) rather than to always require uploading.

sunSorry, unfortunately this request is way too specific. Please have a look at the issue queue - Image maintainers are buried already. You might want to try to get further support at http://drupal.org/support. Additionally, the answer to your question might be covered in the handbooks at http://drupal.org/handbook/modules/image already.
If you were able to solve this issue on your own in the meantime, you might want to add the involved steps to this closed issue, so other users searching for a similar solution might find it.
