The default front page has only one column for content ... is there any way I can have 3 column content area on the front page ?

try the panels module (panels2 is still in alpha or beta, but also viable). you will still have to make it your default front page. just an option.

Yes, definitely use the panels module. It installs very easily and it is easy to use and will give you the 3 column format you desire. It worked great for me on one of my websites.

Sorry, but I'm trying to create my own dynamic menus using jQuery and read that I should be using panels to control placement. But, I don't know how to set the panel to use up the entire webpage instead of only the content area. How do you do this? Or is Panels not meant to be in the whole page?

Typically menus go in blocks which are part of region which are defined by the themes template.php and positioned with the themes page.tpl.php.
