Alex Andrascu commentedWell ...it's still up for debate i think. I've just took over maintnance of this module as i've used it on a quite a big project and we had to have a more up to date official release. I am planing to support it and use it as long as there are others using it. And with Drupal 8 around the corner i guess i'll be pretty busy finding a way to port it / migrate it. I didn't manage to get in touch with the maintainers of Entity References yet but i've promised the former maintainers i will and i'm planing to do so.

earwax commentedI think that answers my question and addresses my concern. I think I will just go with this module and use it. I figure that with 67,000+ people using it, there will be some transition or upgrade that would happen. Someone would pay for it ($$$$) to happen, or someone would step up and do it since it means their job is on the line. :)
