Most of my members copy and paste their blogs from other places which ended up with a lot of line breaks rather than the text flowing nicely. To fix this, my current setup is thus:

Input formats - line break converter disabled

TinyMCE profile - preformatted false, remove linebreaks true, apply source formatting true

Now this is working nicely, however the only thing that isn't now is the content email updates from the system which of course now have no line breaks in them.

Is there a better way of setting this up? I've searched and read, but there doesn't seem to be a conclusive answer so thought I'd ask and see if anyone had succeeded in this quest for consistency...

Perhaps you could create a new input format that continues to retain linebreaks. I'm unsure, but perhaps it could be set up so users could default to one input format while the system e-mails default to the other.

projectstars,

i am also having this same problem and have not yet found a solution.
But i am still also having problems with extra line breaks showing up in the user input text even when i use the settings that you suggest.

what have you set the following to?:
verify html
convert tags

and did you have any luck in creating a new input format takes care of the e-mail formatting?

You guys might want to check out this filter to use with tiny, as I just ran across it and it sounds like it might just be the thing... http://drupal.org/project/smartlinebreakconverter

Thanks for the link goddess - does indeed look exactly as if it's what I need! Unfortunately at the moment tho it's turning all quotes into crazy characters - I've submitted an issue (http://drupal.org/node/196085) so hopefully that'll be fixed soon.

I tried the module and it seems to work well pasting content from .doc files in Windows through FF and IE. However, when pasting from an Open Office document through Linux, i have to insert the context as a plain text file to preserve the correct line spacing and then i lose other formatting such as bold.

...ignore my last comment, it's working fine on my live server (http://projectstars.com) so I'm thinking it was something to do with the setup on my dev server.

I've found that my dev setups often begin behaving erratically after I hammer 'em with a thousand and two module experiments. :)

Argh. Now it's looking great on the website, emails are fine, but the RSS feeds suck - just one big long paragraph, no line breaks. Wish there was a WYSIWYG editor which wouldn't cause all this hassle...!
