I need to create a relatively quick but functional proof of concept site that is basically a social networking site. I'm looking for suggestions on key modules. It will be tweaked out later on.
(I'm pretty new to Drupal but am not new to programming.) Searching Drupal I've found pages such as this list of "community modules" (http://drupal.org/node/206724), user IceCreamYou's suggested list (http://groups.drupal.org/node/10531), etc.
Here's the basic overview: users who we invite will have a detailed profile (and I need to be able specify the characteristics in their profile) with the user being able to set their charactersitics as public/private. "Public" anyone could search. "Private" only other members of the network could search. Network members would be able to "connect" to contacts in the network. May include forums as well.
I know this is somewhat broad & conceptual but could you please suggest key modules I should take a close look at as well as perhaps a general design/implementation strategy?

Look at this page http://drupal.org/node/1237540 then investigate in more detail the distribution profile which seems to suit your needs best. You can either use the profile, or just look at it for ideas about what to include.
