Node Profile does not really depend on Node Family, but having Node Family listed as a dependency causes errors if Node Family is not installed.

It does. Otherwise nothing cares about how many "profile nodes" are created by a user. So nodefamily is used to restrict this to one.

However, for 6.x the plan is to remove this dependency.
