I discovered that the search box dissappears once I am logged out of the admin part of Drupal.
Am I missing a setting, of is it a bug?

Check your permissions:
Go to 'People', select the 'Permissions' tab, scroll down until you see 'Search' and check to see if ANONYMOUS USER and AUTHENTICATED USER are both selected.
