Hi

I am looking to host a video site using FFMPEG. For this I was looking at "Terms of Use" for www.citrexhosting.com. There is one clause (mentioned below) that I cannot translate meaningfully into the no. videos I can play simultaneously. Actually I want to know that can this be a limitation for having the video site with Drupal.

a) Run any process that requires more than 8Mb of memory space, more than 30 CPU seconds, or use more than 5% of all available system resources at any time. This is purely at the system administrators descretion. Resellers users cannot run any process that requires more than 10% of all available system resources at any time.

Please help

Regards

Depending on the size of the videos the number could be zero. Just in general terms that 8MB limit is pretty much a killer and it would not take adding to many modules before that became a problem. In general I have a hard time see site with the main purpose of hosting video doing very well on any shared hosting plan. They are going to chew up disk space and bandwidth and I suspect generally going to get you in trouble with the web hosting company.

Hi Steve

As for the videos, I have a 10MB limit, but I think the average would be somewhere around 6-7 MB. Actually I am just looking to start with a shared plan, so that I can test my site. And if the need arises I am ready to move to a VPS.

And that is why I was looking for a host that can allow me an easy upgrade. I just hope cirtexhosting (it has a semi-dedicated plan) would be good enough for a VPS. But if not then I would have to move to somewhere else.

Since this will be my first hosting, please tell me that is it difficult to switch between hosts. Also can an unmetered bandwidth on a VPS be somewhat a solution.

--------------------------
The modules that I am using include CCK(with some associated modules), flashvideo, Embedded Media field, Views, Panels, Taxonomy Access Control, Minimenus, Captcha, Modr8, Search Keywords, fivestar, flag, invite and many more. And I do plan to use other as well, so do you think it will be an issue with this webhost? If yes then will moving onto a VPS help me avoid this 8MB limit problem.

(also I do not know that the TOS is same for shared and VPS. If yes then the 8MB limit will exist for a VPS too.)

Thanks & Regards

Resource limitations are becoming more common on shared hosts.

They are unpredictable and can cause a lot of grief. If you can stay away from it, it will be for the better.

These restrictions and stone age servers... These shared hosts are not optimized for drupal at all.

Also they never reveal their server hardware and software configuration, which is very important.

The shared hosts should provide:
1. Upfront server configuration
2. Realtime server load tracking
3. Test file downloads to check bandwidth port speed

For example, on my company's website The above can be checked by all visitors in real time, any time of the day!

These things should be transparent to the customers for all hosts.

This copy/pasting of the same ad copy is getting kind of old (already) and seems to verge on spamness.

I had a reseller account at apthost, and a few customers, once, one of them spammed and I received an invoice from apthost for $25.00, I quickly changed host, apparently on the second infraction the fine is $100.00. I hate spammers but if you run a hosting company there is nothing you can do, you know that sometimes you just get this kind of customers.
