A Drupal newbie that has dived in the deep end...

I'm hoping someone can help me or point me in the right direction with regards to a few issues I'm having whilst developing a Drupal website!

Firstly, I'm becoming extremely confused with pages, taxonomy, menus and breadcrumbs. To me, they seem to be very disconnected and hard to organise content with.

For example, is there an easy way to create a number of pages and sub pages that automatically build a menu structure and breadcrumb? Are there any guides or best practices to do this? I would also like to be able to create a view containing the children of a particular page but I'm struggling to implement this apparently simple functionality!

I want to be able to hand the site over to somebody to add content, but I fear they will need to be aware of subtle but important measures to take to make their content appear.

The second problem is creating a breadcrumb for articles. If I create a view called "latest news" that lists news articles and then click to view a particular article, there is no reference in the breadcrumb to where I have just come from. How do I make Drupal behave as a user would expect.

The caveat to all this is I want to limit the amount of modules I use and try to stick to template modifications and the Views module. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated!
