I need to pull information from the base node into the modal window's webform - specifically setting the email address. I know how to do this when the webform is embedded as a block but not when it's in a modal. Any idea on how this can be done?

How are you generating the form? Under what conditions?

The modal window is created by a html link built by Display Suite in a code field using the pattern on the Modal forms project page under the "It is also possible to build links manually" section.
