Duplicated submissions

I can't reproduce this problem and it's not been reported by anyone else over the last year. This seems like it may be a site-specific problem caused by either a module conflict or some custom code on your site.

Considering we haven't had any confirming reports, I'm inclined to close this issue. If you're still experiencing this issue in the latest release (3.20), please reopen the issue with instructions on how to reproduce the problem. If the problem isn't reproducible, we aren't able to fix it.

I'm reporting the same problem on different websites using webform 7.x-4.12.
I don't know where to start to reproduce the error because it happens only some times (of course, not when I'm testing it..).
@quicksketch, what do you suggest? Where can I start?
Can be related to some browser?

Try the latest version of Webform. Is anyone else seeing this? This might happen if someone uses the Back button then submits again, though the timestamp should at least be off by a few seconds.

Hi. We too have noticed this on a few sites. I believe this happens when a user clicks on the submit button more then once or when clicking on the submit button and the form is processing they click on it again. It would be ideal to implement some sort of button disable after the first click to avoid duplication of form submissions. e.g. like drupal commerce does for the payment form. This only happens sometimes.

Can you come up with steps to reproduce the problem?

Hi @Liam. Yes, simply click on the submit button more then once when the form is submitting and it will show you two submissions. Sometimes on a longer form it could take a second to submit so a user might click more then once thinking nothing is happening. I tried it on one of our test sites and also on simplytest.me by using on the default webform 7.x-4.14. In both cases I get duplicated submissions. Please see the screenshots attached. It depends on the number of times a person hits on the submit button.

I have the same. Of course I'm not sure if it has to do with users clicking the button twice. I can't manually repeat it and it only happens llike 1% of the times, but submissions are completely duplicate, users are logged in and *Per user submission limit* is on (1 per user / per day).

That is interesting. I think the way forward is to see if the problem still exists when #1705618: Double click prevention on form submission is committed. If so, this can be re-opened.

This feature already exists in Drupal 8.

If there is a bug. Please create a new ticket.

This is a D7 ticket. Only rarely will tickets move between D7 and D8 for Webform since the codebases are completely different.

I see this problem as well on the most recent webform and with the core patch applied. This really happens rarely so I’m not sure I can find a way to reproduce this. Anyway a few more observations:

1. Sometimes there are minutes between the submissions.
2. The later submissions are identical except that they are missing the information from the first / all but the last step.

My current guess is that this might have something to do with navigating back in the browser history and then submitting the form again. Also webform_ajax and the page cache (form_state forking) might have something to do with it.

If someone is using the back button then resubmitting, it could be intentional.

I forgot to mention that some of the fields on the pages with missing data are required. It should be impossible to make submissions without (valid) values for them. That’s why I’d exclude the possibility of legit submissions.

I’m using this query to sift through several databases:

Maybe this helps someone else to find suspicious submissions. It doesn’t take into account that the form configuration might change.
So this is only meaningful if the configuration doesn’t change too often (compared to the number of submissions), which is usually true for our installations.

It seems that this does occur with both webform_ajax enabled and disabled.

I am facing this issue on my D7 setup.

What version of Drupal are you running?

Drupal: 7.92
PHP: 7.4.33

This was fixed in #1705618: Double click prevention on form submission. Update to Drupal 7.98 to get the fix.
