I think, it is not the task of a file field module to give access rights or not. This should be done by other modules and the private download method. If i need the specific permission or prohibition to look at files, even if the generel content can be seen - then i woul prefer more generic modules like cck field permissions. You should be able to do anything with this module.

No - why not have the feature - whatever? WELL: i think we have so many access-rights in Drupal - an sometimes it gets a bit unsystematic - and this makes the process of configuration a more and more very faultily and difficult task. As i cannot not find any systematic approach in giving this field it's own access-rights - nothing what i could not achieve with other more systematic approaches - i recommend not to do so.

It is only my opinion.

filefield will implement its own access rights so it can work with private files without upload.module. I'm not simply going to drop it. As of now you have to enable all file access perms of filefield, imagefield, and upload.module for a particular role if you are using private files.
