I am getting this error message "the website encountered an unexpected error. please try again later" after the user fills the checkout page, goes to the shipping page and tries to go back to checkout instead of continuing to the payment page. Any ideas? Thanks in advance,

Please review Priority level of issues, critical for you doesn't mean critical for everybody.

That error per se doesn't mean too much, you need to dig further what's causing it, checking dblog (admin/reports/dblog) it's normally a good start.
