Drupal is becoming more and more a major enterprise solution requiring various SQL syntax structures. This feature request is intended for a discussion grounds on creating Drupal SQL which will include another abstraction layer to handle the requirements of various SQL engines.

Isn't this a duplicate of provide database specific queries?

Perhaps for the one issue being resolved. I'll have to take further investigation of the patch to make that determination. At first glance, I don't think a variable_get will resolve all of the issues.
