Since I tried to work with that imagecache user picture solution I think I have this problem though I have reverted to all previous settings.

So, the problem is that if a user changes his picture the picture doesn't change. Only if he clears his browser cache the picture changes.

Any help appreciated..

same issue.

This seems to make lots of confusion for non web-savy subscribers.
It is a usability issue at the fore front.

Also trying to use "Ajax picture preview" does not help.

Any clues?

This is the single most common support issue for my drupal site. I'm going to try using the Unique_Avatar module as a solution. It appends a random string to the end of user avatar filenames, thus forcing the browser to download the updated user picture.

I would advocate for eventually getting this functionality in core. Its too late for D7, so D8 anyone? In lieu of an argument I'll just link to other d.o posts of people experiencing this problem. See:
