I had thought of this interaction as...

  • Click a word, e.g. Show [All Content]
  • Triggers filtering state, i.e., Panel bkg shows, select boxes show, Apply button shows. If clicked "all content" the select box also opens to show sub options

Now that I interact with this, and see it developed slightly differently, I think we can streamline this a bit...

  • Click a word, e.g. Show [All Content]
  • Show the options as currently shown.
  • Click an option [Ideas]
  • Apply the filter without having to click apply.

Said differently, loose the Apply button, Loose the panel background.

Updating with correct image.

Since there are multiple filters/sorts the user might want to engage, wouldn't we want to let them make a final selection and indicate this with "Apply" rather than refreshing and closing the filter area with each touch?

Only if the update for each selection takes more than 3 seconds and disrupts their ability to make further selections.
