It would be wonderful if a certain user/ users of a special role could be excluded or only users of a certain role would be displayed.

This will be possible if the connection with the Views module is made, as you than can create a filter which excludes certain roles. Untill then you can create it yourself by overriding the theme functions, or altering the code.

To limit option-clutter in the administration, I will not put this feature into a release.
