Workbench Media has a dependency on the Media module but only actually requires File entity to operate. Should the Workbench Files module be "reopened" to focus on File entity 2.x with Workbench Media being kept for Media (File entity 1.x) integration?

Somehow Workbench Files also has more reported installs than Workbench Media, so it doesn't look like the project has been abandoned. :S

Workbench Files is deprecated. The 2.x branch of Workbench Media is recommended for Media 2.x

In better words, it's more maintenance to have the two separate modules when really we only need one. We could investigate dropping the dependency on media and make it on file_entity instead, but the I don't think we're going to reverse the decision on deprecating Workbench Files.

Definitely agree on the maintenance front, plus it would be more confusing for site builders.

I'm more interested in moving the dependency to File entity, as I've run into a few sites now that run the Workbench suite for a better admin interface and need file management capabilities but don't require Media (which is primarily about WYSIWYG and a field widget nowadays).
