It would be nice if somehow the EXIF data from uploaded imagefield photos could be utilized.

I'd wholeheartedly agree.
Fronbow has generously constructed his IPTC module in a way that might allow modification/adaptation by someone more knowledgeable than I. Might this be the seed of a tool we could throw at imagefield? Count me in for testing, documentation, cheerleading (and potentially some sponsorship) if this appeals to anyone as a pet project.
