If you uncheck "Automatic alias" for a node, enter your own alias and save everything is fine.

Until you edit that same node again. Now "Automatic alias" is checked again and when you save your original alias is overwritten.

I've already faced this problem and ended up with a patch
I'm not sure if this is the best way to do this fix ..

@Jadelrab - your solution works fine on sites that have relatively few admin created aliases, but the solution is not scalable.

If you check the issue that I linked to you can see that I have provided a new solution which I believe is more scalable.

@greggles : Well i did't say that it is the best solution .. i know that it has some limitations .. also i did't see your patch till your reply :) ..
