After using the SFX theme, I don't feel like using anything else (just my personal opinion). However, it is not listed in the themes section under download and on http://drupal.org/node/18346, its status seems unsure.
Any idea when it will be available?

Theme works a-ok in 4.6
As far as I can tell, the theme works a-ok in the 4.6 release candidate. I installed it last night. The 4.5 version of the phptemplate engine also appears to work in 4.6 but I'm not sure if enhancements need to be made there, I know there are some changes to themes in the changelog.
If that wasn't your question I apologize :)
phpTemplate
Please see this thread for phptemplate for 4.6rc:

The spreadfirefox theme can be found here:
http://drupal.org/project/spreadfirefox
I believe that the it hasn't been tagged for for 4.5 branch yet is that the author felt it needed some work: http://drupal.org/node/17717
The theme was purpose built. It is hard (as I am finding out) to build a good 'general' use theme for Drupal that covers a wide variety of uses in a nice manner. So work was/is being done to cover the gaps.

That explains it..
I used the CVS version of PHPTemplate, so that explains why it works :P
Because it is not tagged yet
We have not tagged this theme yet for 4.6 nor 4.5. Hoping to iron out the issues before we do so.
When a project is tagged with DRUPAL-4-5 then the daily job that packages it will produce a tar ball under 4.5, similary for DRUPAL-4-6 and 4.6.
In all cases a project will have a -cvs.tar.gz tar ball. So use that for the time being.
As for issues: did we find a solution for the white space problem that would make the theme show well under both MS IE and Firefox with no issues? Last I checked this was still an issue and that is what is stopping me from using it so far.
