Like what kind of skills / experience does it take, or do you have to be an insider?

On the basis of observation

On the basis of observation as an outsider, some of the recent people who have moved there have in their background major contributions to code, so becoming a core developer or contributing and maintaining one or more major and high quality modules would be a start. It would not be surprising if establishing a successful Drupal business of your own, particularly one based on specialis skills in one aspect of Drupal work (as some appointees have), would also make you an attractive candidate. Perhaps there are other things which would make you attractive. My comments of course apply to developer jobs. Acquia also employs a team of sales persons, and perhaps a track record of success in selling website services would be an advantage if you want a sales position. Just a guess based my observations of the Drupal world.
