My users would like to have "Like us on Facebook" as opposed to "Follow us on Facebook." I tried adding "Like us on Facebook" into the customized name field for Facebook, but the alt text/name changes to "Follow us Like us on Facebook."

Is there a way for me to customize the text properly without going into template.php?

Without patching the module to change the Facebook's alt text, or to allow custom alt text, your best alternative would be a theme override in template.php.

Custom alt text might be good for other services like Youtube where the verb would be "subscribe" instead of "follow", so maybe someone would like to patch to add this feature. But if that happens it would probably be good to have it in a separate issue with a name that fits it better, or to change this issue's title.
