Breaks all external (theme) scripts

Could not get theme presentation jQuery to work, had jQuery Update set to 1.5. All scripts worked after disabling it and going back to core.

All scripts were wrapped in

(function ($) {
/* code went here */
})(jQuery);

Now that sucks. Needs fixing.
