Support micro-blogging/status in Activity Stream

Project:Drupal Commons
Version:7.x-3.x-dev
Component:Activity/status streams
Category:feature request
Priority:normal
Assigned:Unassigned
Status:closed (duplicate)

Issue Summary

Commons 6.x-2.0 and greater support "microblogging" via the facebook_status module. This is a feature that didn't make it to the MVP for Commons 3.0. This should either be added back into Commons or documented as deprecated.

Meta issue for 6.x-2.x features that didn't make it to Commons 3.0 MVP: #1930406: [Meta] - As a site Administrator I would like to upgrade from 6.x-2.x to 7.x-3.? without losing functionality

This is most likely done via the statuses and the Facebook-style Micropublisher modules. Note: there is a description of how to do integration with Statuses and Messages in this comment from issue 1751064

+1 for bringing this back in as an option. It is a key aspect for social networking site and likely the key that would keep me from moving from Buddypress. I think the architecture of "Following" and radioactivity is brilliant in Commons 3.0, but the posting interface is to intimidating and dare I say, "Drupal-like" for my users who often want to post a quick link or check-in. Front-end posting lowers the barrier dramatically.

+2, IMO this is the most critical feature for user uptake. It's the familiar hook that caused Yammer to spread like wildfire inside our network and got executive attention. A Major part of a social intranet is chatting without creating nodes within a simple UI. Our org will implement a microblog as expectations have been set by users who experienced Yammer and know Facebook.

Dustin, you linked to that comment thread, but have you successfully done the integration recently. It looks outdated. Generally, I haven't seen documentation on how to add new content types to Commons and have it play well with commons. The ability to add modules and have them play well is key, along with front end content creation and publishing that doesn't intimidate casual users..

@Jasonwhat, two answers:

(1) I have not tried the status/messages integration in that link, nor I have I tried to get it working in a "commons 3.x" way. I assume this would be a pretty big effort. Adding the Statuses and Facebook-style micro publisher and integrating with Messages is a lot more work then adding a new content type.

(2) I am working on adding new content types to Commons 3.x (a Commons Survey feature using Webform and Form builder) and adding new content types isn't too bad. I basically just copied what was done in the Commons Post module. Features ends up doing a lot of the work.

There's an issue with some documentation on how to build Commons 3.x #1908812: Provide a -dev version of the Commons make file
