Why would my site suddenly start putting "unknown" in the author area of all the quotes on my site?

example:

Quote - Leadership

Only those who dare to fail greatly, ever truly achieve greatly

— unknown John F. Kennedy

when i edit the quotes, the author is correct. in stating so, that "unkown" is not in the text field and is being created somehow by the module or drupal.

Please help me find the problem.
