I am a member of a team of Administrators who have a Drupal website online presently that our webmaster (with some technical skills that did the trick) built for us in early 2010. It is hosted on Webhostingpad and has thus far been trouble free. But our webmaster retired from the site and there are now a good number of security updates needed. I have some minor skills on Drupal, and thereby know how to take the site offline in order to install the updates. But having never before done such a thing I have been unable to find any information on how to install the updates. I have downloaded the updates, but cannot find out how to install them. Can someone please come to my rescue? Thanks.

How do I install Security updates on existing site running on Dr
Thank you kindly ColdSun.
If you recommend Drush if possible, where do I find Drush - is it resident within my Drupal website site?
Please pardon my ignorance - I am not unfamiliar with computing, just networking. And I must (and love to) learn - computing being my hobby. But I have to learn from scratch - I do not know what "CD into Drupal root directory" means unless that is a command line "CD" which is a Change Directory command in old DOS command line operations.
Basically, if at all possible to take up a bit more of your time, I need a dumby's teacher who can give me step by step as if teaching a 4 year old (when it comes to Drupal and networking). Actually, I was sort of surprised that such a great software as Drupal is, there seems to be no dumby's type means to update necessary security updates. And unfortunately if I cannot learn how to do it, our site will suffer need for security until such time as we can gain a new Drupal-knowledgeable webmaster for it. I prefer to learn if at all possible. But if that would tax your time too much, I would understand.
In fact, I feel even dumber now - I tried to find "tarball" to download it. I could not find any such download in the Download & Extend category on Drupal.org. I cannot find Drush either - obviously Drush must be already within my existing website installation, or it has to be downloaded and installed on my website.
Do you have shell/command
Do you have shell/command access to the webserver? If not, you will need to update via FTP.
If you don't have access to a
If you don't have access to a command prompt on the server, try the following
1) Download http://ftp.drupal.org/files/projects/drupal-7.20.tar.gz (the tar is also known as a tarball).
2) Uncompress it (google winrar if you need a program to do so)
3) Upload the files (overwrite) to the root (main) directory of the drupal installation
4) Open up your web-browser and log into your site. then go to /update.php to update your drupal database.
You should be all set =)
Sorry for the relatively sparse help, I'm currenty on my ipad =(
I did not install Drupal, nor
I did not install Drupal, nor did I build our website. Nor did I install the website on our server. Those were all done for our adminteam by our technician (webmaster) who has since retired from our website team.
Therefore on my computer I have nothing of Drupal installed - and I am beginning to suspect that that is why I cannot find any software that will open the Drupal security updates, much less Drush of tarball. And it was also the retired webmaster who set up the website on Webhostingpad - so perhaps that is why I have no means of command line on the Webhostingpad server (our only server.
And with these thoughts in mind, I tried to find thye Same Drupal download that the webmaster used because that is what created the current website - I cannot find a Deupal download for Drupal 6.20. My thought was to download that same Drupal software and install it on my computer without connecting to the net (I cannot chance destroying our website with over two years of our work on it). That way I might find the tools on my computer thaty are needed to do security updates on the website? I am in this from a;most less than scratch trying to pick up (learn) where the webmaster left off.
So I do not know of any command line access to Webhostingpad - all I have is the command prompt that is part of MS Windows.
You need to have the FTP
You need to have the FTP username and password.
The Drupal package isn't 'software' in the sense that you seem to think it is. It is a series of web scripts that are ran by the server. Having a copy on your machine in no way can hinder the online site unless you were to FTP (login and transfer) conflicting files.
Assuming you can get the ftp username and password, you simply download the latest Drupal6 version. Uncompress/unzip/untar/whatever it, and then FTP it into the root directory.
If you are unable to get the FTP username/password, try contacting the host for it. Otherwise you may be SOL.
Thank you so much
Thank you so much ColdSun,
You have helped put my feet on the right spot on the ground of understanding what my problem is - I do not know what "FTP" stands for, but I do know that I don't possess any user name or password. But I do know which of our adminteam does have these keys, so I now understand why I am having the difficulty. I will probably do fine if I can log in because command line I did use a fair bit in the PC DOS days when 2 and 386 dinosaurs were the newest kids on the PC block.
Thanks again for your patience with my Drupal illiteracy. I can now see the next step in learning in front of me.
