Views and ORM

Please could you give me a short summary overview of views and ORM integration/use for Drupal 7 and Drupal 8? I'm learning Doctrine at present with the view to better understanding Drupal core architecture and there is clearly a lot of overlap between ORM queries and Views. They are both included in Drupal 8 are there any plans toward a convergence/integration of Doctrine and Views? Thanks. Laurence
